You’ve just landed and your dream vacation is about to begin. Because you’ve been dreaming for months about the delicious food, the adventures, and the relaxation ahead of you, your anticipation’s high. As you take a deep breath, you realize that the air smells amazing. The temperature is perfect. So this is set to be the vacation of a lifetime.

And then, you guessed it, a category four tropical storm has developed seemingly out of nowhere and you’re directly in its path. Now, you’ll need to spend your first days of vacation gathering emergency supplies, stocking up on food and water, and figuring out where the safest place to stay is. Next, you’ll hunker down and hope the storm won’t be as bad as the forecasters are saying.

Adversity’s normally seen as a bad or negative thing in life. When you make plans, envision goals, and create dreams, you don’t include difficulties or misfortune that might occur along the way. It’s perfectly natural to not plan for the rough patches or the potholes of various sizes that you’ll encounter and feel discouraged by.

So, what do you do when life serves you a large helping of adversity?

These ten adventurers have walked the path and experienced plenty of adversity along the way. Check in with their thoughts and carry them with you as a way to open your awareness the next time a storm shows up in your life.

Adversity Begins Within

“In nature, nothing is perfect and everything is perfect. Trees can be contorted, bent in weird ways, and they’re still beautiful.”

Alice Walker

“I have complete control over the meaning I attach to any situation and how I respond to it.”

Cynthia Kersey

“Genius has always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.”

Albert Einstein

“If you want to achieve anything of value in the world, you have to get used to the idea that not everyone is going to like you.”

Simon Sinek

“We think we live in a set of circumstances, but we don’t. We live in our conversation about the world and our conversation about the circumstances.”

Lynne Twist

“Rich people focus on opportunities. Poor people focus on obstacles.”

Harv T. Eker

“Don’t let what you don’t know scare you, because it can become your greatest asset. And if you do things without knowing how they have always been done, you’re guaranteed to do them differently.”

Sara Blakely

“If all we do is spew anger and fear out onto other people, it’s completely ineffective.”

Scilla Elworthy

“To remove discord, we must remove the cause, and this cause can be found only in the world within.”

Charles F. Haanel

“Most self-criticism and self-judgment is motivated by love. Part of you is just trying to motivate the rest of you to do something for your own good . . . The problem is that it tells you only part of the truth.”

Jack Canfield

Bonus quote

“If you can’t find a way, make one.”

Cynthia Kersey
