Authenticity + Integrity = Genius

Genius has always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.

Albert Einstein

You don’t have to be a theoretical physicist like Albert Einstein to be a genius. It really only takes being true to yourself and expressing that truth through how you live your life. It takes belief in yourself, commitment to your principles, and the willingness to act. It becomes integrity when you’re facing adversity, great or small. That’s the time to ‘walk your talk.’

If It Was Easy Everyone Would Do It

It is not freedom from conditions, but it is freedom to take a stand toward the conditions.

Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning

It’s a commonly held misperception that life is best when it’s trouble-free. In fact, the opposite is true. There are a number of examples in Nature that illustrate this paradox. The oyster would never produce a pearl if not for that grain of grit or irritation. The cones of Lodgepole Pines can’t release their seeds without the intense heat of a fire.

In a study conducted by researchers Daniel Lim and David DeSteno of Northeastern University, evidence emerged that clearly demonstrated a link between experiencing adversity and the increase in resilience. “If you understand the suffering of others, it motivates you to have compassion and want to help them, which builds strong social bonds, which is a way of allowing yourself to become more resilient,” says DeSteno.

The challenges, obstacles, and difficulties are what create the opportunity to forge your resilience. As a result, this resilience forms the unshakeable foundation of your integrity. It’s in these times that you truly come to know who you are and what you’ll stand for.

They Like Me

If you want to achieve anything of value in the world, you have to get used to the idea that not everyone is going to like you.

Simon Sinek

Living in your integrity means that some people won’t like you or what you stand for. It’s essential at these times that you understand with total clarity why you believe what you do. Time spent identifying your core principles and values will provide the clarity and inner strength necessary to navigate these instances.

There are a variety of ways to cultivate this self-knowledge. It’s possible to uncover your principles and values on your own and in partnership with an unconditionally supportive coach who believes in you, empowers you, and celebrates you.

In order to get started, take some quiet time and journal around these questions.

What emotional states do you value most?
What thoughts and actions create those emotional states?
Where are you experiencing them right now in your life and where would you like to experience them more?

Genuine self-knowledge allows you to take in your experiences as well as the viewpoints of others, integrate the ideas that empower you, and then, continue on in alignment with your authentic self. It’s in this way that you’ll experience, express, and feel the joy of your true genius.
