What does it mean to live from our hearts? What if we could tap into our intuition by quieting our mind, listening to our inner voice, and taking action? Many people reach a point in their lives when they feel out of alignment with what their heart and their head are telling them. We feel like we’re being pulled in two directions, and we start asking ourselves what we want from life and how we can experience fulfillment. Let’s talk about how we can connect the head with the heart, so we can know what to do next.

What has your inner voice been trying to tell you?

We had the privilege of speaking with Howard Martin of HeartMath, on the Living the Dream Virtual Summit. Much of his career has been dedicated to the connection between the heart and listening to our intuitive guidance. Howard Martin co-founded HeartMath with Doc Childre in 1991. Together, they co-authored the book, the “HeartMath Solution,” considered by some to be the definitive work on the intelligence of the heart. His latest book is “Heart Intelligence, Connecting with the Intuitive Guidance of the Heart.” Howard also helped to launch the Global Coherence Initiative, using science to bring our global consciousness out of instability, and into balance.

HOW DO WE KEEP GETTING CAUGHT IN THE MYTH OF WHAT OUR LIVES SHOULD BE?

Most of us grew up with a sense of what we thought success was supposed to be. We feel like we have to achieve material wealth or acquire items, but this leaves us feeling less connected and unfulfilled. Our intuitive voice of the heart becomes drowned out by our conditioning. In chasing the dream, we may be productive or successful, but we still aren’t happy. Something is missing, and we may be wondering, “Is this all there is?” In Howard’s own life, he became a drummer at a young age, leading to a successful career in music. Despite his accomplishments, he felt lost and unfulfilled, and he chose to commit himself to his personal growth, despite having to let go of his ego, his prowess as a musician, and be willing to go through hardship. Following your heart may not be a path that rewards you immediately, but it is the most authentic path.

HOW DO YOU WALK AWAY FROM YOUR PATH?

It takes support. Howard looked at what his values were in life, and what made him feel inspired as a human being. His music career was masquerading as being of service, but at the heart of it was his status, and his ego getting stroked by all of the fame and applause. He confronted that, and looked at what he truly wanted in life. He wanted to know that without the external measures of success, he could be happy and have an experience of a life of purpose. Circumstances will not change right away, and there is a process. The key to this is to have what Howard calls intelligent courage. You have to step out of your comfort zone and tap into what at HeartMath is the heart, which is the very root (in the French word for heart, “coeur”) of the word courage.

HOW DO YOU FIND OUT WHAT YOUR CORE VALUES ARE?

By taking a deeper look at what heart is, Howard read books about personal development and saw many references to heart. With this running theme in mind, he started to approach his life with heart. What if he put out more care, more kindness, and more positivity, rather than complaining, and judging? As he changed his behaviors, his life changed. He left the music business, as the lifestyle no longer fit his perspective. Howard also believes we’re all born with a fulfillment package. It is different for each us, what is in each box, but our primary goal in life should be to open the box and to look for what’s inside. So many people get caught up in the day to day and don’t even get to experience what fulfillment is for them.

HOW CAN WE ACTIVATE OUR HEART’S INTELLIGENCE?

Even amidst confusion, our most significant tool is our heart. When we make the connection, and bring it beyond philosophy, and into our daily lives, we can become attuned to our authentic self. It is intuitive, and we can avoid the linear thinking processes, and go straight to what it is that we want. We can create things we’ve been avoiding, or afraid to do, but heart intelligence can give us the push we need.

IS THIS JUST PHILOSOPHY, OR IS THERE SCIENCE BEHIND HEARTMATH?

HeartMath is more than just a philosophical conversation; there is a science behind it. Through the study of neurocardiology, we can see that the heart sends signals to the brain. Research has found that the heart produces hormones, and can regulate the stress hormone cortisol, and the heart also creates oxytocin, the “love hormone.” When the heart, the brain, and the body communicate and are in harmony, we can connect better with other people.

HOW DOES TAPPING INTO GRATITUDE ALLOW US TO CONNECT MORE DEEPLY?

When we are grateful, the quality of communication between the heart and the mind improves. 90% of our bodies function is affected by our autonomic nervous system, and all of the major networks in our bodies become in sync. Hormones create regeneration, which can impact our health long-term. People can begin to experience synchronicity as we tap into our intuition and our heart. We are more in touch with the flow of life. When we are stressed, we get thrown out of the flow and become disconnected.

When you connect through compassion with yourself first and then begin to share this with others, you can notice being in the flow and can tap into your inner wisdom. What could be different in your life if you could listen to your heart that much more clearly?
