What Is Thought?

They’re so powerful, your thoughts can enslave you or they can serve you. Where they come from and why you have them is something yet to be explained by science. However, we do know that thoughts have a direct and potent effect on your

emotions
actions
wellbeing

as well as altering the chemicals in your brain and body. They’re the ‘prima materia’ from which the story about who you are and why you’re here is crafted.

Since your thoughts appear to have a mind of their own, it may seem impossible to learn how to master them and harness their energy for your benefit.

What’s So Bad About Negativity?

All success in life, whether material or spiritual, starts with the thoughts that you put into your mind every second of every minute of every day. Your outer world reflects the state of your inner world. By controlling the thoughts that you think and the way you respond to the events of your life, you begin to control your destiny.

Mastery of your thoughts isn’t forcing a thought out of your head or pushing it back down. It’s also not having exclusively positive thoughts. You see, negative thoughts aren’t bad, they’re simply coming from a part of your mind that’s learned that this is a language you will listen to. You can teach yourself to pay more attention to the positive thoughts according to Dr. Barbara Fredrickson, author and social psychologist.

One of the tools Dr. Fredrickson suggests is to create a Positivity Portfolio. Write down 6 to 10 positive thoughts that authentically and naturally generate warm or happy feelings. You can even create a Positivity album of photos on your phone.  If you prefer audio, use your phone’s voice recorder to store them so you can listen during those times when you can’t read.

Set aside any judgments you have about your negative thoughts and trust the process. Remember, it’s not necessary to disprove the negatives or to prove the positives. Allowing yourself to simply connect to the thoughts is enough.

Creating an inner climate of positivity doesn’t have to be hard work. In fact, it can be approached with a sense of playfulness. Game designer and evangelist, Jane McGonigal tells her own story about the power of mastering her thoughts as part of her gamer approach to becoming SuperBetter. In her TED Talk, she explains the 3 to 1 Postive Emotion Ratio. Each time you notice a negative thought, read or view at least 3 positive ones.

Experience 3 positive emotions for every 1 negative emotion

The more you notice your thought patterns, the more you’ll become conscious of the effect they have on you. Each time you choose to replace a negative thought with 3 positive ones, as Jane describes, you affirm to yourself that you’re capable and worthy. This strengthens your confidence and commitment to creating the life you wish to live.

Make a plan to practice this skill for 30 days. Set aside time each week to review and refresh your list of positive thoughts. Set up a reminder in your daily calendar to prompt yourself to actively engage with your thinking throughout the day. After a month of this, it will become second nature.

If you find yourself forgetting, take that opportunity to begin again with fresh enthusiasm. One helpful strategy is to find an accountability partner. This is will be someone you can text whenever you’re successful in your practice. Having support as you cultivate this new mental habit will confirm that every small bit of growth counts.
